OVERVIEW

The Gestalt Centre Group Facilitation programme offers you the opportunity to gain a Certificate in Group Facilitation.

The Certificate is designed to provide theoretical and experiential learning and the development of skills and practice for people working in groups and teams in a range of settings.

The aim of the programme is to help you become a skilled and reflective facilitator with  confidence, knowledge of groups and teams dynamics and effective strategies and tools you can use to support effective practice.

WHO IS THE CERTIFICATE FOR

Anyone who is facilitating groups or leading teams or is planning to do so.

The Certificate courses are designed for people working in a range of settings, enriching this way learning across different disciplines and organisations.

Participants include professionals working with people and teams such as coaches, consultants, team leaders, GPs, counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists, teachers, lecturers, NGO leaders, residential workers, voluntary sector workers and others.

GROUP FACILITATION CERTIFICATE OUTCOMES

  • Deepen understanding and awareness of the role and scope of group facilitation.
  • Further understanding of group and team dynamics ‘below the surface’, and how to work effectively with them, generating effective communication and change.
  • Learn and practice working with the group or team in relevant effective ways with context in mind – rather than sets of exercises to be applied ‘to’ a group.
  • Experience and practice working in the ‘here and now’ with ‘what is’ and with the insightful Gestalt approach that uniquely combines thoughtful theoretical input, experiential learning and skills practice.
  • Develop a deeper awareness of yourself and capacity to use this well in service of the group or team.
  • Find out how to plan and prepare for facilitating groups.
  • Consider and appreciate diversity, intersectionality and cultural dimensions in a group or team.
  • Gain insight into how groups develop norms, roles and structure and build your confidence to enable effective change and high performance.
  • Raise your capacity and skills to work with groups and teams, effectively, in turbulent times.

These overall programme outcomes are complemented with specific course content outlined in each course section.

Please note that some of the courses are offered on-line and others only in person. Offered only on-person: Working with Conflict and Confrontation in Groups & Teams and the Facilitation Intensive.

All four courses need to be completed, along with relevant assessed work for the Certificate. For more see the ‘Requirements’ section  below.

Groupwork Tutors

Michael Ellis MA

Michael is a UKCP Registered Gestalt Psychotherapist and a consultant and trainer with over 30 years’ experience of working with groups and consulting to teams in various settings, particularly in the public and voluntary sectors. He was Managing Director of the Gestalt Centre for many years as well as the Core Tutor for part of the Centre’s MA programme. He has an MA is in Consultancy with Organisations from the Tavistock and is particularly interested in how our ideas and beliefs affect our interactions with others and the organisations we work in, as well as how the organisations affect us as individuals.

SACHIKO KISHI MA

Sachiko is a UKCP and BACP registered Gestalt psychotherapist, supervisor, and trainer. Her background is in cross-cultural arts and media consultancy where she was involved in examining international social and cultural trends. Later, she shifted focus to working in innovative approaches to mental health in the community and in higher education. She has worked for nearly 25 years with groups, in the private and public sectors and with third sector organisations. Formally a faculty member of the Gestalt Centre, she believes that the Gestalt holistic model can offer valuable ideas for working and living more creatively in our increasingly complex world.

Emma Haughton FRSA MAC

Emma is an accredited coach, facilitator, and trainer with over 25 years experience supporting individuals and organisations in the creative and social sectors to realise their vision and potential, to navigate change and uncertainty and to develop with purpose. She is co-founder of Generate Partnership, a company of coaches and facilitators with a strong belief in the power of human relationships to improve individual and organisational purpose and impact.  Emma is an Accredited Relational Dynamics 1st Coach, trained in Gestalt Coaching and in Gestalt Group Work and Facilitation; she’s also a certified Team and Organisational Systemic Coaching and Constellations practitioner. She is a coach and regular contributor/partner to Clore Leadership programmes and a coach for climate coaching programme ‘Coaching in the Movement’.

HOW TO APPLY TO THE CERTIFICATE

You apply to each course, complete the section on the form about the certificate and let the tutor and Gestalt Centre reception know that you’re interested in the certificate.

It is also possible to apply to complete the Certificate, retrospectively, after completing the individual courses.

  • REQUIREMENTS  

    ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

    • a good level of communication skills
    • emotional intelligence, capacity for self-reflection, openness to self-exploration and ability to respond appropriately to feedback.
    • able to consider and explore the theoretical aspects of the course.
    • able to organise and lead the group facilitation case study of the programme – during or within 18 months following the taught part of the course. To be discussed and agreed with the tutor.

    You’ll find it helpful if you have:

    • experience working with people in a human-centric role or profession.
    • some previous experience of group work, either as facilitator or co-facilitator.
    • some experience of personal development work (such as reflective professional development or therapy).

    CERTIFICATE AWARD REQUIREMENTS 

    1. 100% attendance at the Group Facilitation: Key Concepts, Skills and Personal Development course (online & in-person options)
    2. 100% attendance at the Understanding and Working with Dynamics in Groups and Teams course (online & in-person options)
    3. 100% attendance at the Working with Conflict and Confrontation in Groups & Teams course (in-person only)
    4. At least 85% attendance at the Group Facilitation Training Intensive course
    5. A Case Study – Facilitate a group or team in your professional context and write it up as a case study. It can be a group or team you are already facilitating or one you set up for the certificate.

    The group needs to have a minimum of 6 participants and meet regularly over a period of time, with a minimum of six sessions of at least an hour and half each.

    You need to be formally in the role of facilitator. Co-facilitation is possible as long as you are equal co-facilitators.

    You’d provide an outline to the course tutor and gain agreement that the project is suitable for the Certificate.

    You’d have a supervisor of your choice for this work.

    Write up of the case study – 4000 words.

     

    All the above requirements need to be met and completed within three years to be awarded the Certificate.
